IS IT POSSIBLE TO GAMBLE YOUR LIFE AWAY?

HUGE CONSEQUENCES – SENSIBLE ADVICE

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO GAMBLES TOO MUCH?

Gambling problems are often linked to feelings of shame, leading a double life and lies. For this reason, many friends and relations realise the existence of the problem only after a considerable amount of time has passed. This has many knock-on effects, and the problem is then harder to overcome.

Perhaps you feel suspicious when the household budget doesn't add up; when someone is very keen on the idea of betting or when stories don't tally. Perhaps you are seeing a change in behaviour or mood?

For each of the 48,000 compulsive gamblers there are often between eight and 10 friends and relations who are also affected. There are furthermore another 84,000 people who have problems controlling their gambling. Even more people will be adversely affected if these gamblers also lose control.

For these reasons it is important to prevent and overcome gambling problems and addiction.

TALK ABOUT IT

An Imam talks about compulsive gambling

It is a good idea to do something at the stage when someone already feels strongly inclined to gamble. Before problems being to grow. Before consequences become serious. Perhaps before the gambler him- or herself realises they have problem.

Most people can regain control of their gambling and get their lives back. We know that it helps to talk about it. The way forward is through support. So even if it is difficult, talk to someone about it: either family, friends, your doctor or imam.

TREATMENT HELPS COMPULSIVE GAMBLING TO BE OVERCOME

60 % regain control completely*

30 % suffer less from a relapse*

10 % need more help*

68 % SEEK HELP ONLY WHEN THEY HAVE HAD A PROBLEM FOR OVER FOUR YEARS*

The more time passes, the worse the problems become. It can be very hard for someone to overcome their gambling problem alone. Most people need support and many also require professional help.

We hope that you will find the necessary courage as well as knowledge to break the taboo and put a stop to compulsive gambling.
